New Year's Day

Broward County Unveils New Courthouse Opening Next Year

A new year means a new judicial building in Broward County.  Officials say it took 12 years to plan and build the new courthouse.

“Construction cost was about $212 million with our total project budget at $318 million,” said Steve Hammond, the assistant director for Broward County Public Works.

$10 million was designated for state of the art security infrastructure. There are cameras surrounding every inch of the building inside and out.

“The security features of the building are enhanced,” Hammond said. “All in all it's a superior project.”

Officials say with the old courthouse, there are several issues including handicap accessibility issues as well as mold problems. They say when it comes to the new courthouse, those problems are gone.

The courthouse is set to open to the public on the first week of January.
