Broward Humane Society Offers Discounted Rates for Veterans

Military vets will get a 50 percent discount on pet adoptions in Broward.

The Humane Society of Broward is now offering military veterans discounted adoption prices.

Veterans will be able to adopt pets that are more than 1-year-old from the main shelter in Fort Lauderdale for half the price.

"They've been a hero for our country, now we want them to be a hero for our shelter pets," said Cherie Wachter, with the Humane Society of Broward.

Available pets include dogs, cats, rabbits and occasionally guinea pigs. Regular adoption fees are $100 for dogs, $25 for cats and $20 for rabbits.

In many cases pets are companions, but for many war veterans, it goes beyond the emotional support. Pets have the capability of helping veterans with their injuries.

"We do hope that some of the veterans that come here might find that potential dog that can become a service animal for them," Wachter said.

The pets will be spayed or neutered, given preliminary vaccinations, microchipped and tested for disease before leaving the shelter.

Proof of military service is required to receive the veteran discount.

The main shelter is located at 2070 Griffin Road. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 954-989-3977 or visit the Humane Society's website.
