Authorities have arrested a man who they say fled to Canada after shooting and killing a business owner who was trying to help an elderly man in Pembroke Park back in September.
Ervin Watson, 27, was taken into custody in Canada earlier this month and is facing a murder charge in the killing of 57-year-old Philip Antonino, Broward Sheriff's Office officials said Friday.
Officials said Antonino was walking to his business near the Kwik Stop at 5551 W. Hallandale Beach Boulevard the morning of Sept. 22 when he saw Watson berating an elderly man who was cutting the grass.
Antonino stepped in and tried to stop Watson, who pulled out a gun and shot Antonino twice, officials said. Antonino was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Surveillance cameras captured the fatal encounter but authorities said Watson fled to Canada. He was brought back to Broward County, where he was being held without bond Friday, jail records showed.
Watson faces charges for premeditated murder, fleeing and eluding, grand theft and burglary of an unoccupied dwelling. He has seven prior arrests in Broward dating back to 2008, including grand theft, petit theft, loitering, resisting arrest, burglary, possession of burglary tools, violation of probation and eluding, officials said.
