Broward Schools Chief Begins Meetings With MSD Parents

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie and school district officials were holding one of four meetings with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School parents and guardians Thursday.

Thursday’s meeting will be for the parents of 9th grade students to ask questions and share their concerns with the superintendent.

Runcie has faced harsh criticism since the mass shooting at the Parkland school, where 17 students and staff members were killed almost a year ago on Valentine’s Day. A final MSD safety commission report found that there were open gates regularly left unmanned at the school prior to the shooting, along with other safety failures.

The superintendent had originally scheduled a parent meeting last week but district officials canceled it citing security concerns.

A letter from a school district spokesperson said in part that "numerous threats of protests on social media created an unacceptable risk for students who will be attending events on campus."

The superintendent will hold a meeting for 10th and 11th grade parents on Monday and Tuesday, and senior parents the following Monday. The meetings are not open to the public or the media.
