Broward Schools Considering Tearing Down Stoneman Douglas Building Where Shooting Happened

Broward County School officials say the district is considering whether to tear down and replace the building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where a gunman opened fire.

A spokesperson for Broward Schools said it would require funding from the legislature and stressed that no final decision has been made.

Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie told local media outlets that the school building where the shooting took place should never be reopened.

A memorial in honor of the 17 victims of the shooting is expected to replace the building if it's torn down.

State Sen. Bill Galvano, a top Republican, toured the building on Thursday. Galvano says he supports having the state help pay to raze the building and replace it. He said it could cost as much as $30 million.

Authorities say 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, a former student of the school, shot into at least five classrooms in building 12.
