Broward Teacher Wished to Marry 14-Year-Old Student: Police

Daniel Azemar is accused of lewd and lascivious battery and molestation.

A teacher is being accused of having a monthslong, sexual relationship with one of his 14-year-old students, authorities said.

Daniel Joseph Azemar, 34, of Lauderhill, Florida faces eight counts of lewd and lascivious battery, four counts of lewd and lascivious molestation and one count of custodial sexual battery, according to an arrest report released Friday.

The victim’s mother accessed her daughter’s phone and found Azemar was having sexually graphic conversations with her child under the name “James,” police said.

The victim told police the relationship started at the end of August 2018 with Azemar first buying her food and drinks.

The relationship eventually turned physical. Police say Azemar would lure the girl to private places on school grounds and have sexual encounters with her.

Azemar maintained constant communication with the victim outside of school through social media. Their exchanges were romantic in nature, police said, with Azemar at one point telling the victim that he’s “had his eyes on her” since she was 11 years old and wished to marry her.

Azemar also told police he believed the victim “understood” him and met his emotional needs while he and his spouse were having marital problems.

The police report also stated Azemar was well aware of the victim’s age because he threw her a party for her 14th birthday.

Azemar was the girl’s current homeroom, math and social studies teacher, and she was his student for sixth, seventh and eighth grades, police said. They redacted the name of the school where he taught.

He was booked into Broward County jail on $400,000 bond. It’s unclear if Azemar has an attorney.
