Broward West Nile Virus Case Confirmed

Lab tests confirm first case since 2004

Broward County health officials have issued a warning after a case of West Nile Virus was confirmed.

The advisory was issued Friday after lab tests confirmed the unidentified individual, who has fully recovered, had West Nile. The health department said the person had developed the symptoms but had not been out of the country in the two weeks beforehand.

It is the first confirmed case in Broward since 2004. West Nile is transmitted by mosquitoes and is not spread between people. Symptoms include fever, rash, headache, fatigue, weakness and dizziness.

"We are pleased that the individual has fully recovered and we will continue to work with our mosquito control partners to minimize the potential for additional mosquito-borne infections," said Paula Thaqi, with the Broward Health Department. "We strongly encourage all residents and visitors to take appropriate measures to guard against mosquito-borne illness.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activities when mosquitoes are most active and to use repellent.
