Miami-Dade/Broward Smell of Everglades Fire

Everglades brush fire makes Broward and Miami-Dade smell of smoke

Broward and Miami-Dade County residents woke up to the smell of smoke Monday morning from a brush fire in the Big Cypress National Preserve.

The fire has been burning for more than two weeks, and now the winds out of the west have been pushing the smell of smoke towards Florida's east coast.

Officials say  28,800 acres have burned so far, and the blaze is about 60 percent contained. About 360 fire fighters and support personnel are battling the fire.

Fire crews were concerned about the winds and dry conditions fanning the blaze. This could possibly effect Interstate 75, causing low visibility, said Jim Payne, spokesman for the National Park Service.

The smell in Broward and Miami-Dade is expected to diminish in the afternoon when the wind direction will shift.

Crews are also applying fire to the ground in a systematic way near roads and trails to consolidate the fire lines, otherwise known as burnouts.
