Tamiami Trail Reopens After Brushfire Forces its Closure

Portion of road in Miami-Dade reopened

The Florida Highway Patrol  on Wednesday reopend a large portion of Tamiami Trail after smoky conditions forced them to sht it down.

FHP said the situation in the area will be monitored.

Officials say smoke from a brushfire in Miami-Dade County that started Tuesday made conditions unsafe for driving.

A total of 7,000 acres have been burned so far and officials plan a series of control burns to cut off the fire before it spreads to nearby roadways.

"This burnout has been successful in keeping this wildfire from reaching the developed areas adjacent to the park and minimizing the impacts to visitors and residents of the area," said Incident Commander John Wallace of the Florida Forest Service. "We are hopeful that this fire will be completely contained by the end of the day."

Airboat operations by Miccosukee Tribe of Indians have experienced intermittent closures on certain trails as officials tried to control the brushfire.

The road, also known as U.S. 41, is closed from Krome Avenue in Miami-Dade County to State Road 29 in Collier County.
