Alien Invader Causes Customs Agents to Bug Out

Bug got a free trip to South Florida

U.S Customs and Border Protection agents got an unpleasant surprise at Port Everglades last month in the form of a tiny bug from Turkey.

The alien creature was identified as a Eurygaster maura Linnaeus, but it's commonly referred to as the wheat bug. The bug was found inside a tile shipment from Turkey on December 20.

This is the first time the bug has been spotted in South Florida and this species of shield bug can be a pest for corn, wheat, rice and barley crops. It's unclear how much damage the bug invader could do, but its vacation was cut short by customs.

The bug isn't known to live anywhere in the United States.
