Burglary Suspects Arrested Inside Fort Lauderdale Store

Burglary suspects involved in a police chase were arrested inside a Fort Lauderdale store Tuesday in an incident caught on camera.

The video shows the two suspects run into the Family Dollar store along Sunrise Boulevard just before 11 a.m. A short time later, officers flooded the store as the suspects surrendered.

"Police officers told everybody to run out the door," employee Chris Ragan said. "It was crazy, everybody was screaming, running out even the kids, customers and everything."

Fort Lauderdale Police said the suspects, who haven't been identified, were part of a larger group of four who tried to burglarize a home in the 3600 block of Southwest 12th Court earlier Tuesday.

Wanda Cruz said she was home with a friend when the suspects tried to open her door in what police said was an attempted burglary.

"He goes to the front of the door put the keys in and tried to open the door like that - click click click click," Cruz said.

She said earlier this week her purse was stolen out of her van while she exercised at a nearby park. Inside her purse were her ID with a home address and a spare key.

Cruz believes the suspects tried more than once to get inside, but could not because her husband -- a locksmith-- beat them to the punch.

"They went and tampered with the door and tried to open the door with the old key, which didn't work anymore because I had re-keyed the doors the day before," Louie Bigay said.

When police arrived they spotted four suspects in what investigators say was a stolen car and pursued them all the way to the Family Dollar store, where officers say the suspects crashed then took off.

Fort Lauderdale police say two ended up inside the store, but officers were not far behind.

"It was just crazy everybody was screaming and running out even the kids, even the customers," said an employee.

Surveillance video shows two of the suspects giving up, being put in handcuffs and led out.

Cruz said she never imagined something like this happening and that she is still a little shaken up but relieved.

"Thank god everything's OK," she said.

Police said all four suspects are in custody but they have not released their identities.
