Two burglary suspects took some coins and a laptop from a Plantation restaurant called the Original Pickle Barrel – and then returned to help themselves to some pickles, the manager said.
The male suspects made off with about $50 in miscellaneous coins in a smash-and-grab at the restaurant at 1007 S. University Drive last Tuesday, Jan. 28 at about 5:02 a.m., Plantation Police said in a news release.
The surveillance video shows one suspect throwing “a big rock object” to smash the bottom of the door window, said Jeff Gretka, who is the restaurant’s manager and part owner.
“And one gentleman hopped over the counter, tried to grab a register and getting out the front door, but he didn’t get very far, he couldn’t pull the thing out,” Gretka said.
Video shows that suspect taking what appears to be a bill from that register. Meantime, the other suspect cleaned out a second register on the other side of the counter.
Gretka said of the second suspect, “And the other gentleman just shot back to my office, and he went in there and stole a laptop, and tried to get the safe out, but he had no chance of getting the safe out.”
Gretka called what happened a shame, saying that people should work.
“You shouldn’t be making your living doing that. But obviously it must have made them thirsty, because after they left they came back in and got themselves a Gatorade and helped themselves to some pickles,” he said. “You know, we just want to make people happy to be hungry here. That’s what we want to do.”
The restaurant has been open five months, he said.

The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle, according to police.
