Burn Teens Back in Court

Lawyer for one of three teens accused of Mikey Brewer attack to seek venue change

The trio of teens accused of pouring rubbing alcohol on 15-year-old Michael Brewer and lighting him on fire during a dispute over a video game in Deerfield Beach last year were in court Friday for a brief hearing.

Wearing orange jumpsuits over plain white t-shirts, Matthew Bent, Denver Jarvis and Jesus Mendez were all in a Broward Circuit courtroom where their attorneys requested more time to prepare their defenses.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 2.

The attorney for Bent, 15, said he plans on asking the judge for a change of venue, according to CBS4.com. It's unknown whether the attorneys for Jarvis, also 15, and Mendez, 16, will also request a change of venue.

Prosecutors allege Mendez was the one who lit the match to set Brewer on fire during the horrific Oct. 12 attack on Brewer. A group of kids had surrounded Brewer, who was their classmate, to argue over a video game that Brewer had reportedly agreed to buy from one but never paid up.

Brewer was burned on over 60 percent of his body and spent months in the hospital recovering from his injuries.

The three teens have spent the months after the attack locked up, and all are facing attempted murder charges as adults.
