Resident of apartment in which fire started sustained third degree burns

Firefighters responding to an apartment fire Friday rescued an elderly Miami Beach woman who sustained 3rd-degree burns over 20 percent of her body.

The woman, in her 80s, was found unconscious and slumped over her walker inside the unit at 7135 Collins Avenue, where the fire started. She was transported to Ryder Trauma Center.

It is unclear what caused the fire, which caused extensive smoke damage in the building, according to Miami Beach Fire Rescue Public Information chief Javier Otero. The incident is under investigation.
