Arrest Made After 9-Month-Old Baby Taken in Stolen Car in Margate

Police have arrested a 17-year-old they say stole a car with a baby inside that was stolen in Margate on Tuesday.

Officers said the mother told them she left the 9-month-old girl unattended in the running car while she went inside the post office in the 4700 block of Coconut Creek Parkway, which is when the teen allegedly took off in the car with the baby inside.

The baby and the car were found a short time later in the 5300 block of W. McNab Road in North Lauderdale.

"The way the baby was slumped over in the chair, it's like she wasn't alive," said Jona Wells, who found the baby and the car.

Police said the baby wasn't hurt and was reunited with her parents.

Officials say the teen - who lives in North Lauderdale - will be charged with grand theft auto and burglary while a charge of false imprisonment of a child is pending.

The teen, who had been released on bond, appeared in court Wednesday and was given 21 days of house arrest.
