Two women who were the caretakers for an elderly Fort Lauderdale woman drained her bank account out of more than $1 million and stole dozens of pieces of her jewelry after she died, police said.

Angella Morrison, 54, and AnnaKay Johnson, 29, were arrested last month on charges of grand theft and exploitation of an elderly victim, Fort Lauderdale Police officials said Monday.

According to police, Morrison and Johnson were employed as caretakers for the woman and were able to gain her trust while working for her. Police said the woman had been diagnosed with dementia in 2013 and completely depended on caretakers.

But in the early months of 2016, the women began to manipulate their position and started to receive large bonus checks from her, police said.

When the woman passed away in March 2016, the suspects deflated her bank account by making several withdrawals that amounted to more than $1 million, police said. They also stole more than 50 pieces of the victim's jewelry, which they pawned for cash, police said.

Morrison, of Fort Lauderdale, and Johnson, of Coral Springs, were arrested on March 7. Attorney information wasn't available.

Police are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim of the suspects to call them at 954-828-5700.
