Carnival Cruise Line to Design ‘Green Ships'

Carnival Cruise Line is going green as the company announced Tuesday that it plans to build two new ships.

Both ships will be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel, according to Carnival Corp.

The LNG-powered cruise ships will be a first of its kind in North America. The South Florida-based company said the new ships will also be the largest in its fleet.

The first gas-powered ship is scheduled to be completed as early as 2020. The vessels are being constructed by Finnish shipbuilder Meye Turku.

Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy said the ships are being designed for maximum energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.
