Carvalho Gives Back-to-School Speech

Superintendant praises teachers as the first day approaches

"A greater Miami" is the vision Miami-Dade County Schools Superintendant Alberto Carvalho shared with teachers and staff as they prepare to kick off a new school year.

Carvalho praised teachers Thursday for their work in improving FCAT scores and increasing the county's graduation rate to 72.1 percent. He also pointed out the county's nomination as one of four national finalists for the Broad Prize for Urban Education, an accomplishment he says educators liken to the Nobel Prize.

"Win, lose or draw, our selection as a finalist is evidence of our success in reinventing ourselves, in reinventing our school system," he said.

Carvalho also highlighted the role of teachers in pushing to keep Miami Edison and Miami Central Senior High open when they faced closure threats because of performance.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to keeping the schools open under his watch.
