Center Offers Free School Supplies to Some Broward Teachers

A Broward County resource center is helping some teachers put school supplies in the classroom.

"We have a lot of new merchandise we're putting out that we've just received from donations," said store manager Hector Javier.

It may look like your local office supply store, but all the packs of paper, calculators and index cards are just for teachers to use in class. Javier and his team of volunteers keep the shelves stocked.

"They're usually shocked. They didn't expect to be walking into a store like this. We operate just like a retail store but at no cost to them," Javier said.

NBC Miami first told you about the resource store back in January when it moved into its new home in Pompano Beach.

Since the brand new facility opened, more than 100 teachers a week have visited and walked away with school supplies. In total, it's been more than 1,100 teachers in just six months.

Now, the rush is on to have the center ready for the start of the school year.

"Teachers often spend a lot of money out their own pocket. A thousand to $1,500 a year out their own pocket so not only are we helping the kids in need get the supplies they need to participate and keep up with everyone else in class, we’re helping take some of the financial burden off the teacher,” Javier said.
