Child Dies After Being Saved From Drowning at Virginia Key

Three other children still in the hospital

One of the four children who were saved by a tourist last weekend has succumbed from his injuries and died Friday.

Christopher De Los Santos had been in critical condition at a local hospital since Sunday, when he and his three cousins nearly drowned while playing in a sandbar on Virginia Key.

They were saved by Douglas Butler, a tourist from Gainesville who was visiting the area with his family. Butler, 47, died during his daring rescue.

The two families who had their children saved by the total stranger released a statement today about the heroic deed.

"Words cannot express our feelings of sorrow for the loss of Douglas Butler. We are truly grateful for his heroic actions and we are deeply saddened by the loss of his life," the statement read.

The three other children are still in the hospital.
