Children Dance Their Way to Fitness at Everglades Elementary in Weston

Dancing is how nearly 1,000 kids started their Wednesday morning at Everglades Elementary in Weston.

"It's a warm morning and they are standing here, jumping around and running, and exercising," Weston Mayor Daniel Stermer said. "It's a wonderful way for young people in our schools to start to understand about physical fitness from an early age to carry through to my age because I go to the Y every morning."

Outside the school, the 934 students danced to music played by a DJ for 35 minutes.

"We are going to give a prize for the school that has the most participants in the mayor's challenge run," said Julian Gazzal Jr., the VP of the Rotary Club of Weston. "We're going to give $1,500 for the first place school."

The 4th Annual Mayor's Get Fit Challenge Cup will be Sunday Dec. 8 at the Weston Town Center. Registration opens at 5:00am with races starting at 6:20 a.m.
