Hundreds of Pets Find Homes During 2019 Clear the Shelters in South Florida

More than a dozen shelters in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe participated in NBC 6 and Telemundo 51's pet adoption event

Hundreds of pets found forever homes during Saturday's 2019 Clear the Shelters event in South Florida.

More than a dozen shelters in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe participated in NBC 6 and Telemundo 51's event, which is part of an annual national campaign to find forever homes for animals in need.

Shelters waived or reduced adoption fees to help families find and adopt a new pet. Other services were also free, depending on the location.

"There was a long line of folks here so we're very excited," Miami-Dade Animal Services Director Alex Munoz said.

More than 900 animals were adopted in South Florida in the days leading up to Saturday's big event. More than 450 more were adopted Saturday. Since this year's event was launched on July 27, more than 105,000 pets have already been adopted nationwide.

Hundreds of animal lovers lined up early to find a pet to take home as dogs and cats of all shapes, sizes and ages got new owners Saturday.

At the Humane Society of Greater Miami, a dog named Walter found a new family after 300 days in the shelter.

"I feel like crying, I've been checking him out for two weeks and I knew he was the one," new owner Mary Garcia said.

At Broward County Animal Care, 8-year-old American Staffordshire Herbert found a new home after spending a year in the shelter. (More on Herbert here.)

"He's adorable, my son loved him right off the bat," owner Dana Powmesamy said. "I think we're all just gonna love having him."
