Mine Floating in Atlantic Was Training Device: Police

The beach near Dania Pier was evacuated Thursday

Navy explosive ordinance disposal specialists confirmed that the mine found floating in the Atlantic ocean one mile east of Dania Beach Thursday is a training aid, Hollywood Police spokeswoman Lt. Diana Pereira said Thursday night.

She said the cylinderical device would be removed and towed to the Coast Guard station in Fort Lauderdale.

As Thursday progressed, the cylinder, believed to be a Navy mine, made its way south toward Hollywood Beach, with Pereira giving its location at one point as about 1,200 yards off shore from Scott Street.

Coast Guard crews were enforcing a “safety zone” in the Atlantic after a mine was found in the ocean one mile east of Dania Beach Thursday, and a Navy disposal team was on the way to get the device, the Coast Guard said late Thursday afternoon.

A Good Samaritan found the mine, the agency said.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said earlier in the afternoon that the Coast Guard and Navy were trying to determine if the “unknown floating object” found in the water was harmless, as they suspected.

Taking precautions, BSO deputies evacuated the beach near Dania Pier as the federal sea authorities checked out the device.

Boaters were asked to make “alternate transit arrangements” as the Navy dealt with the mine.
