Police Identify Victim in Pompano Beach Fatal Shooting, Link to Crash on I-95

Broward Sheriff's Office officials say a Thursday night shooting in Pompano Beach that left a 46-year-old man dead is connected to a late night crash and shooting on I-95 outside Fort Lauderdale.

Investigators say Trevor Mitchell, a military veteran and longtime native of the city, was barbecuing for friends near North Dixie Highway and 15th Place around 7:30 p.m. when an argument began with another man, later identified as 46-year-old Donel Bostick.

Bostick opened fire, killing Mitchell before he fled the scene, police said. A Florida Highway Patrol public information officer said there was a collision on the southbound ramp to Davie Boulevard around 8:15 p.m.

"While on scene, an individual (Bostick), armed with a gun, refused to come out of the vehicle. This individual did fire the weapon, and was detained without further incident," the FLPD said in a statement, adding that no injuries occurred.

BSO said the person detained was the suspect sought in the Pompano Beach shooting. Detectives say the two men knew each other and graduated from Blanche Ely High School in 1990.

A motive for the shooting remains unknown as an investigation continues.
