Community Demanding Roadway Changes After Man's Death

Just days after a pedestrian was struck and killed while trying to cross the street, a community is demanding change. They believe the roads aren't safe and need more crosswalks.

One of the biggest issues for community members is Wilton Drive. It's a busy street and there are a lot of shops and restaurants in the area.

Protesters said it's not pedestrian-friendly because there aren't enough crosswalks, medians or lights.

This has been an ongoing issue but earlier this week, 68-year-old Greg Futchi, a well-known singer in Wilton Manors, was killed crossing Wilton Drive and that's what sparked the protest.

It was held outside City Hall on Friday because protesters want city officials to do something about it. However, Wilton Drive is a state road and the city doesn't have jurisdiction to do anything to improve it for pedestrians.

But, protesters believe something needs to be done because there have been numerous fatalities in the area.

Critics said pedestrian crashes are usually caused by jaywalking. But those at Friday's rally said that only happens because the road is not pedestrian-friendly.

NBC 6 contacted FDOT and a spokesperson confirmed the state has plans to assess safety issues on Wilton Drive. They said the plans are preliminary, but will include city and community input.
