Worker Dies After Falling Off Palmetto Expressway

A construction worker has died after falling off the the Palmetto Expressway Friday morning, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

Authorities at the scene say the construction worker was injured after falling off the highway near Northwest South River Drive.

He was was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, according to a Medley police officer.

FHP officials confirmed he died at the hospital.

He’s been identified by his employer as Peter Bilinski, working as a bridge inspector for The Corradino Group. He was apparently surveying some construction when he fell.

The fall is estimated by fire rescue officials to be about 30 feet from the top of the overpass to the ground. At first he was conscious and telling rescuers that he was in a lot of pain.

"He was alert, oriented upon our arrival but that doesn’t mean that what he suffers inside is not significant so that’s why our crews packaged him rapidly, called air rescue and had him transported immediately to the appropriate facility," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Felipe Lay said.

His employer sent out a press release expressing their sadness and saying that Mr. Bilinski was with them for over ten years.
