Cops Collar Copper Thieves

Trio did $200,000 in damage going after scrap metal

A trio of Broward County copper thieves who caused $200,000 in damages during a two-week spree were finally nabbed by police.

Brandon Kramer, 21, Ulises Cruz, 20, and Conner Frazier were all busted yesterday and charged with grand theft for their pricey scrap metal swindle, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The three used a ladder to climb onto the roofs of Deerfield Beach businesses, where they dismantled air conditioning units and stole the copper coils.

The coils, which weigh about 150 pounds, were then sold to scrap yards at about $6 per pound.

When one of the scrap yards noticed the thieves were cashing in on a lot of the copper coils, they called the cops.

BSO said the three ripped off at least 30 businesses in the county. During one job in particular, they caused $100,000 in damage to the Mancini Development, located at 1650 S. Powerline Road.

The three men were booked into Broward County Jail after they took cops on a tour of all the businesses they hit, police said.
