Cops ID Causeway Carjack Suspect

Name released of man who died in Miami Beach gunfight

Officials have identified the suspected carjacker who was shot and killed by Miami Beach police last week after a wild chase on the causeway that ended with a head-on collision and a shootout on the street.

Lawrence Raymond McCoy went down in a hail of police gunfire Thursday night after police said he carjacked a taxi then took off going the wrong way on the Causeway. McCoy's joyride ended when he hit another car head-on, but rather than give up, the 29-year-old came out of the taxi with guns ablazing.

According to Miami Beach police, two officers, Frank Celestre and Adam Tavss, were involved in the shooting. Tavss was also involved in the controversial shooting of a man outside a club just four days before. Husien Shehada, 29, was unarmed when he was shot around 4 a.m. after a confrontation with a police officer.

Tavss had just been cleared to return to duty the morning of the second shooting. Both he and Celestre have been placed on administrative leave.

Both shootings are still under investigation.
