Cops Open Fire on Pit Bull That Charged Crowd

Dog killed in Fort Lauderdale after threatening people

A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was forced to shoot and kill a pit bull in Fort Lauderdale after it charged at a group of people, police said.

Police responded to the 2300 block of Northwest 15th Court just after 8 p.m. Thursday where they found two pit bulls fighting.

When one of the dogs began to charge at a crowd, which included a young child, the officers took action. They first tried to use a stun gun, but when it didn't subdue the pit bull, they were forced to open fire.

One dog was killed, the other wasn't injured.

Witness Shirley Sweet said her grandchild was in the crowd, and that the deputies were in the right place at the right time.

"The police had to do what he had to do, because my grandbaby could have got bit," Sweet said.
