Counterfeit Cash Spree Nets Prison for 2 in South Florida

Two people will do time in federal prison following a South Florida counterfeit spending spree involving thousands of dollars of fake cash.

A Fort Lauderdale federal judge last week sentenced 35-year-old Bernardo Lecaros of Delray Beach to more than two years in prison. His partner, 23-year-od Mariana Cordova Ortiz, got eight months.

Both previously pleaded guilty to passing and using counterfeit money. Authorities say Lecaros spent about $5,400 of the fake cash at a casino in Hollywood and, along with Ortiz, bought luxury items at the Palm Beach Gardens Mall.

Investigators later found more than $69,000 in counterfeit money in Lecaros' possession. Court records don't detail where the bogus money came from.
