Couple Recalls Violent Near-Carjacking in Oakland Park

Terrifying moments for a South Florida couple who said they were viciously attacked. They believe the attack came as three assailants were trying to rob them and take their SUV.

The two college students were at the 7-Eleven near I-95 and Cypress Creek in Oakland Park just after midnight when they said two women and a man in the parking lot came to attack them.

The back window of their SUV was completely knocked out and the front window caved in. They said a woman with dreadlocks, captured on the store's surveillance video wearing a green shirt and khaki shorts, came at them with a baseball bat.

"If they had the chance, I have no doubt they would have took the vehicle, took my phone, my wallet, anything that was valuable in there," one of the victims said.

"She swings the baseball bat through the windshield and then she goes around and swings it to the back window and breaks the back window," the other victim explained.

The couple said they went into the store for a late night snack and when they came out they noticed a cellphone charging by the window. They said they believe that was a distraction as before they got in their SUV they were assaulted. The two women and a man got out of a white Dodge.

"The two girls are on her attacking her. One has a baseball bat. The other girl is just punching her. I turn my face. I don't know if the baseball hit me or the kid hit me. You know, I got dazed," one of the victims said.

The pair said the clerk came out to aid them and the woman with the bat was trying to get in their SUV.

"I feel like she tried to reach to see if the key was in the ignition or something like. If the key was in the ignition they would have stolen the car," the couple said.

As the trio left, the couple captured photos of the vehicle leaving. A closeup of the license plate shows what they believe to be EQYJ and either 04 or Q4.

BSO is investigating the incident. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
