Crews Assess Damage From Water Main Break in Oakland Park

The extent of the areas without water weren't immediately known

Crews were assessing damage from a water main break that may leave many residents in Broward County without water through Saturday night.

Chaz Adams, a Fort Lauderdale spokesman, said the full extent of the damage to the water main wasn't known, but there would probably be no water through the night hours. Once water is restored there will be a boil water advisory in effect, he said.

The water main break occurred at around 8 p.m. and is located at 38th Street between 5th and 6th Aves. Water lines had to be shut off, affecting Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors.

Broward residents had been constantly calling 911 about the water main break, Mike Jachles, a spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Office told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. But he advised that they only call for emergencies, fires or crimes.

Residents were very upset the water main break affected their Christmas Eve plans.

"People were on their way to my house them. I called them. We don't have water. It's supposed to be a festive time so I'm upset right now," said resident Brian Jamison.

A boil water advisory was in effect for all of Fort Lauderdale,Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Port Everglades Authority, Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, Oakland Park, Wilton Manors and sections of Davie and Tamarac.
