23 Displaced By Fire at Lauderhill Apartment Building

At least 23 people were displaced by a large fire at an apartment complex in Lauderhill Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out in a first floor apartment at the complex at 4024 Inverrary Boulevard around 7 a.m., officials said.

Crews from Lauderhill, Sunrise and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Footage showed firefighters battling heavy flames and smoke on a ladder truck.

"Units quickly made entry and found an overwhelming amount of flames and smoke pouring out of this apartment which quickly spread to adjacent apartments," Lauderhill Fire Capt. Jerry Gonzalez said.

The crews were able to get the fire under control and no injuries were reported.

Several apartment units were badly damaged or destroyed and the Red Cross was working to help those displaced.

Yvonne Watcon said she had already gone to work and her son was home when the fire started in their unit. The son called 911 and ran to alert neighbors.

"I'm still praising God because life could be lost but thank God he spared everybody," she said. "It's total, total, total loss, but thank God, nothing happened to anybody, everybody's fine."

The cause of the fire is being investigated but officials said they believe it is accidental.
