Crist No Man of Steele

GOP head won't support Florida Governor for Senate

Republican party Chairman Michael Steele isn't quite ready to get behind fellow GOPer Charlie Crist in his Florida Senate race.

Appearing on "Meet The Press" yesterday, Steele coyly dodged host David Gregory's questions over why he won't back the Governor's Senate Run.

Though Crist has already gotten the endorsement of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, he also angered several Conservatives with his support of President Obama's economic stimulus plan.

"I will follow the lead of the state party leadership in making their determinations with respect to primaries and the outcomes thereof," Steele told Gregory.

As of now, Crist is the favorite to win the Senate seat, though Speaker Marco Rubio could present a challenge. But Steele remained mum on which way he might be leaning.

"Charlie Crist is going to be in a primary for this office. If he wins the primary, I look forward to supporting him if the party's behind him," Steele said.

"Do you think as head of the Republican party that you need more voices like Governor Crist?" Gregory asked.

"I need voices period," Steele said.
