The time for fence-riding is over. Gov. Charlie Crist is finally taking a stance on something. Too bad for Supreme Court nominee Sonya Sotomayor.
Crist came out Tuesday and said he would be against Sotomayor's confirmation because of "fundamental" differences, the Miami Herald reported. But Republicans should slow down before thinking good ol' Charlie is changing his guard to full-blown Republican right values.
In fact, this stance is in direct opposition of the Republican he is trying to replace, Sen. Mel Martinez, who praised President Obama for the nomination of Sotomayor and said he plans to vote in favor of her confirmation.
Crist, who has been accused of being a Democrat in disguise (among other things) simply doesn't like that fact that Sotomayor isn't a fan of guns.
"I have strong concerns that Judge Sotomayor would not strictly and objectively construe the constitution and lacks respect for the fundamental right to keep and bear arms. For these reasons, I cannot support her appointment to the highest court in the land," Crist said in a statement.
We don't think Sotomayor is quivering in her robe at the thought that Crist hasn't joined her fan club since he doesn't have a vote anyways. But the statement does mean Crist has taken a side opposite that of his primary competition for the U.S. Senate seat he covets, Miami's own Kendrick Meek, who has criticized the governor for not choosing a side on anything.
Take that Meek.
