Cross-Examination Expected of Man Shot, Left Paralyzed by Palm Beach County Deputy

A young black man left paralyzed when shot by a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy is expected to be cross-examined in the federal trial over his lawsuit.

Dontrell Stephens is expected to resume testifying Friday. The 22-year-old man testified Thursday that his hands were up and he was unarmed when he was shot in September 2013 by Palm Beach County deputy Adams Lin. The deputy says Stephens had reached for his waistband and had thrust his left hand forward while holding a dark object, making him think he was about to shoot him.

Stephens alleges that the shooting violated his civil rights and is seeking over $5 million in damages.

Stephens said he is in such constant pain he often finds himself crying. Lin has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing.
