Cuban Boaters Found Off Key Biscayne

The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a group of Cuban boaters off Key Biscayne Wednesday.

The small makeshift vessel was spotted near Elliott Key, Coast Guard officials said.

Video showed the eight boaters from the small vessel being put on a Coast Guard boat. Officials said they are sunburned and dehydrated but otherwise in good shape.

The group will be transferred to a Coast Guard vessel offshore and processed.

"Once they're interdicted, from that point they are taken aboard a Coast Guard cutter where they are given food, water and basic medical attention, clothing, shelter, and from that point we start the process for repatriation," Petty Officer Mark Barney said.

Earlier Wednesday, the Coast Guard announced that 64 Cuban migrants were repatriated to Cuba. Earlier in the week, another 64 Cubans were repatriated.

Since Oct. 1, 2014, 4,084 Cubans have tried to illegally migrate to the U.S. by sea, Coast Guard officials said.
