Cyclist Killed After Bike Collision in Weston: BSO

The man fell in the path of a truck after a collision involving other cyclists.

A cyclist was killed Sunday morning after a collision involving other cyclists in his group sent him flying into the path of a passing truck, deputies said.

A group of about 300 cyclists was riding on U.S. 27 in Weston by Mile Marker 31 just after 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Witnesses told investigators there was a chain-reaction collision that caused 47-year-old Miguel Aviles to fall into a lane where a semi-truck was driving. Aviles fell in front of the two rear tires and was run over.

Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue transported Aviles by helicopter to Broward Health Medical Center where he later died.

Police said the driver of the Transport of Arizona truck, 46-year-old Eddie Da Costa, did not notice what happened and initially drove away. Another driver flagged him down and he went back to the scene to assist investigators.

BSO traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
