Shoppers at Dadeland Mall were frightened Sunday evening when a crook set off fireworks inside the mall, police said.

According to police, a man was trying on an expensive watch at the Mayor’s Jewelers when he threw firecrackers on the ground and ran off.

Police said the fireworks caused panic in the mall, causing shoppers and workers to think there was an active shooter.

Some stores closed their doors as a precaution and kept shoppers inside until the all clear was communicated.

The suspect got away with the expensive watch.

The mall closed at 7pm, which is the normal closing time on Sundays for the mall.

Eight people were treated at the mall for minor injuries, but no one was taken to the hospital.
