Dania Beach Hit & Run Suspect has Bail Reduced

The man accused of running down two brothers walking home from school in Dania Beach last month had his bail reduced and walked out of jail Tuesday.

Zachary Benjamins was originally being held on a $350,000 bond for allegedly running over Kelvron Florence, 14, and AJ Brown, 8. However, his bail was dropped to $151,000 Tuesday and he was released from jail after posting the money.

The Dania Beach accident took the life of the younger brother, AJ, and Kelvron is still fighting for his life in a local hospital.

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives said Benjamins was driving his girlfriend’s Toyota Tacoma when he hit the two kids. Detectives were tipped off to the truck’s whereabouts when the owner of Atlantic Coast Collision in Fort Lauderdale said Benjamins brought the truck in for repair; and it had damage matching the description of the one detectives were searching for after the accident.

Benjamins asked last week for his bail to be reduced. Prosecutors argued against lowering the bond because they feared he might flee to his home state of California where he’s on probation for assault.
