Date Set for Alvarez Recall Vote

Special election to be held March 15

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez will have a couple more months to make his case for why he should stay in charge of the county, after commissioners set a date Thursday for his recall election.

The special election, set for March 15, was approved by a 10-3 vote and the ballot will include District 13 Commissioner Natascha Seijas.

The election was discussed for about an hour, with Seijas viocing opposition until a judge can hear her lawsuit that's attempting to block the recall.

Seijas claims there are "potentially fatal errors" in the 4,373 certified signatures on her recall petition, which she believes weren't scrutinized closely enough by the Clerk's Office.

The court hearing on her suit is scheduled for Jan. 18, according to the Miami Herald.

Just last week, several commissioners boycotted a meeting that would have set the election date which was set anyway at Thursday's meeting, which Alvarez did not attend.

Billionaire Norman Braman launched the recall effort in September after county commissioners passed the $7.3 billion budget. Nearly 120,000 signatures were collected.
