Burglars Smash Windows of 40 Cars at Davie Apartment Complex

Residents had a rude Monday morning awakening after approximately 40 vehicles were burglarized at a Davie apartment complex.

The burglaries happened overnight at the Palm Ranch, Countryside and Stirling apartment complex on Stirling Road near University Drive.

"We thought it was an April Fools' joke," one resident said.

A few vehicles had its windows smashed out or shattered, with the glass scattered all over the parking lot.

One resident said the burglars took just his dental supplies and left the valuables behind.

"Kind of frustrated as to why, I had plenty of stuff in my car they could've taken, but they didn't, so why even bust out the window?" Wiekus Tolles said. "Sunglasses, credit card was in there, none of that was taken."

Residents were also frustrated that the complex's security gates are broken and have been stuck in the open position, which may be inviting to criminals.

"We got an email saying they would fix it eventually, but it still has not been fixed," Tolles said.

The Davie Police Department said it is investigating but there is no surveillance footage and no witnesses have come forward.

Palm Ranch Apartments said in a statement to NBC 6 saying it is cooperating with law enforcement.

"Last night/early this morning the community was the target of unknown vandals who damaged/burglarized vehicles belonging to our residents," the statement read. "The comfort and welfare of our residents is very important to us and we are saddened by these events. We are cooperating with law enforcement in an ongoing investigation and hope for the speedy apprehension of those responsible."
