Deadly Ex-Cop Avoids Jail in Massive Pot Bust

Adam Tavss loses police certification after grow house bust

The Miami Beach police officer who was involved in two fatal shootings in a matter of four days in June 2009 and was arrested this past May after police found a massive marijuana operation inside his home won't spend time in jail for the pot bust.

Adam Tavss will serve two years' probation and two years of community control and will lose his police certification, a judge ruled Tuesday, after Tavss pleaded guilty to selling and trafficking marijuana. He was also ordered into drug treatment.

Tavss was busted in May at his home on the 14000 block of Southwest 94th Circle Lane, where cops found 47 pot plants worth about $50,000 after they received a CrimeStoppers tip.

The three-year veteran resigned from the force last November after he failed a drug test that found pot in his system. It wasn't the first time that the troubled cop had been accused of dabbling in drugs. He was also reportedly investigated for cocaine use in 2007 after another officer accused him of using the drug.

But the real trouble for Tavss came in June 2009, when he shot and killed Husien Shehada, a 29-year-old tourist from Virginia who was walking with his brother on Collins Avenue around 4 a.m.

Tavss confronted Shehada and his brother Samer outside club Twist in the June 14 incident, believing they had a weapon, according to police. However no weapons were recovered after the fatal shooting.

Just four days later, on June 18, Tavss was back on duty when he was involved in the shooting death of Lawrence McCoy, a suspected carjacker.
