Deadly Shooting in Northwest Miami-Dade

Another shooting leaves one man dead and police on the hunt for his killer

Police are on the hunt for a killer after a shooting late last night in Miami-Dade left a man dead.

Octavious Pruitt, 23, was shot to death at 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, according to police.

He is just the latest victim in a string of violent shootings in Miami, and his death prompted community activists and neighbors to come out to the street and call the community to action.

Anita Holmes was just one community leader on the scene who said the situation right now is "like a war zone".

She is with an organization called Mothers and Fathers Against Gans and Guns. "We're calling a cease fire, calling a stop to violence but it's more than just organizing marches and rallies, it's about education," said Holmes. "Our children are dying like garbage on the street."

Holmes and other activists think the recent rash of shootings may be gang-related.

Janice Riggins is the great aunt of Pruitt. She too, is fed up with the violence.

"To come here and see a young man out in the street with all these bullet holes in him and no one knows who did it, I think it's really sad," she said.

Police said there were multiple witnesses who saw the shooting occur. They are urging those people to come forward with any information that may help lead them to the gunman.

Tipsters can call Crimestoppers and remain anonymous at 305-471-TIPS.
