Death Investigation Underway in Wynwood After Woman's Body Found in Road

What to Know

  • Chopper footage showed officers near the victim’s body around the intersection of Northwest 21st Street and 1st Court before 6 a.m.

Police say they are investigating how a woman was struck and killed by a car in what they're calling a hit-and-run early Tuesday morning near Wynwood.

Officers responded to the area of Northwest 1st Court and 22nd Street around 4:15 a.m. after a security guard saw a woman laying in the road unresponsive, Miami Police officials said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the woman was run over but it was too early to determine if that was the sole cause of her death.

Officials have not released information on the victim’s identity. Friends said the woman who was struck was a homeless woman who was well known in the area.

"She’s somebody’s mother, she's somebody's aunt, regardless of what her situation was, try to help her to keep her inside, you don't just throw them away like that, because they're human," friend Sonia Mitcheler said.
