Delayed Demolition of St. Petersburg Pier to Begin Soon

Officials say the demolition of the St. Petersburg Pier is on track to begin in less than a month, ending an unexpected delay caused by the absence of a required permit.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Public Works Administrator Mike Connors delivered the news Thursday during a City Council meeting.

Two weeks earlier, Connors had said the city was ready to begin tearing down the shuttered inverted pyramid tourist destination, but the work was halted when officials realized they did not have a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Connors says the city has received the document from the corps about historic preservation and expects the city to approve the matter soon.

Officials say construction of the $5.2 million Pier Park will begin in early 2017.
