In an interview with NBC 6, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel criticized politicians for not enacting gun reform, particularly when related to mental health.
Israel said no one with mental health issues should have access to a firearm.
Several agencies, including the FBI, have been criticized for not taking preemptive action to prevent the tragedy as accused gunman Nikolas Cruz had previously been reported for suspected dangerous behavior.
When asked about the warning signs and reports raised related to Cruz before the shooting, Israel said that his agency does not see any reason for why it should accept any blame.
He said he would "act accordingly" if he finds one of his deputies was "remiss in their duties or didn't follow policies."
"At this point let me be empirically clear, the only responsibility for these horrific deaths and shootings is the killer," Israel said. "This was a detestable, cowardly killer who snuffed out the lives of 17 people who should be with us."
"This is all on the killer," Israel said.
