Person Dies After Car Crashes, Submerges in Alligator Alley Canal

A person died after a vehicle crashed into a canal and submerged at Mile Marker 49 on Alligator Alley.

Florida Highway Patrol said one person was inside the vehicle when it crashed into the water on the stretch of Interstate 75.

According to officials, the driver, who was driving a Waste Management vehicle, was driving on I-75 in a reckless manner. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver of the Waste Management vehicle did not stop.

That's when the driver veered onto a paved road, struck a guardrail and drove into the canal.

Video showed divers pulling a body out of the water. FHP said the person was deceased when pulled out of the water.

A representative from Waste Management released a statement:

"Earlier today, a third-party vendor was driving a new Waste Management truck that was not yet in service in Collier County to a location in Broward County for a non-mechanical repair. Tragically, that driver was killed in an accident. Waste Management is working cooperatively with the Broward County Sheriff's Office on the incident."

Authorities are investigating whether a medical incident led to the crash.
