Donald Trump Talks Golf and Football

Trump purchased the Doral resort for $150 million in February

Donald Trump, the new owner of the Doral Hotel & Country Club, attended the annual World Golf Championships Cadillac Championship Thursday and spoke about his new plans for Doral’s TPC Blue Monster course, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.

"Doral can be the absolute best," Trump was quoted as saying. "All I do is provide the canvas. You know, it's not my major business, but I love golf and I've had a great relationship with golf."

Trump hired Gil Hanse to redesign the course.

“If we can bring some of that element back to the course, which I think was critical in the original design, that will be a good accomplishment," Hanse was quoted as saying. "It will be a much more interesting and, I think, more visually appealing style."

Hanse is also designing the course for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, according to the newspaper.

"The combination of interesting winds with new hole locations and trying to get them into different angles, we're hopeful it makes them more interesting,” Hanse was quoted as saying. “That's what we're after, as opposed to hard or easy."

The 320-acre course will remain open until after next year’s WGC, when it will be closed for six months for renovations, the newspaper said.

"I have friends that are very successful people, and they love to garden,” Trump was quoted as saying. “And I like to garden, too, I guess in a much bigger way. I also love tremendous acreage."

Trump just purchased the resort for $150 million. He said he will spend more than $200 million on renovations, but won’t immediately change the name of the resort, according to the Sentinel.

"It's going to stay Doral, at least for the next year, and I'll always be keeping the name Doral in some form," Trump was quoted as saying.

Trump also spoke about the hype around free agent Peyton Manning.

"[Dolphins owner] Steve Ross is a very good friend of mine,” Trump was quoted as saying. “He's a member of my club in Palm Beach, and I think that Peyton would be great for Miami. I'm a fan. I did a commercial with Peyton and his brother for Oreo which got the commercial of the year, and I think it was because of them, not because of me."
