Dope Bust for Local Football Star

Palmetto High standout and Ohio State recruit Jaamal Berry nabbed with weed

It's not a lot of pot but it might be enough to derail a promising local High School football star's college career before it even begins.

Jaamal Berry, a a standout running back at Palmetto High and Ohio State recruit was nabbed by cops around midnight Thursday with a bag of weed in his car.

Cops stopped Berry's Nissan Altima and found the bag in the backseat with about 28 grams of the good stuff, according to a police report.

The 18-year-old was arrested and released on an undisclosed bond. He's expected to be charged at a later date.

"I'm just going to continue supporting him and help him get through this situation and move through the process," Palmetto coach Larry Coffey told the Miami Herald.

Berry led the school in rushing in 2008 and is an ESPNU Top 150 recruit.

Berry faces some steep penalties for his dope bust. Possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana is a felony in Miami-Dade that can carry up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine.
